Kodiak is a coastal brown bear of enormous proportions who inhabits a salmon-rich river valley in the temperate rainforest. Despite his terrifying size, he possesses a remarkably gentle disposition, preferring to share fishing spots rather than fight. His faded red bandana marks him as a bear who once wandered close to a logging camp and was shown kindness. He remembers, and he has been gentle with humans ever since.
Gunnar is a brown bear woodsman who lives at the edge of a boreal forest, running a small timber operation he inherited from his father. Built like a fortress with paws that could crush stone, he is paradoxically one of the gentlest souls in the valley. He brews his own mead, carves wooden figurines in his spare time, and has never once lost an arm-wrestling match at the local tavern.
Ursa runs a backcountry survival school deep in the mountains, teaching people how to live off the land. She grew up in the wilderness and it shows in every economical movement. She can start a fire in the rain, track anything, and once fought off a mountain lion with her bare hands. She doesn't speak much because she doesn't need to.
